Anyone still here?

Hey everyone, I just wanted to post to let y'all know that the novel writen from YOUR votes is now available for sale here. You can buy a print copy or a digital copy, and all proceed will be donated to the Office of Letters and Light- no profit for me!

This year, I'll be writing a Choose Your Own Adventure style novel, and whew, it's going to be a challenge. Are any of you doing NaNoWriMo this year?

Title!

Okay, so I finished with 50,042 words at about 2am Sunday morning (or late Saturday night, depending on how you look at it) and I am DONE. Oh my goodness, guys, I had so much fun writing this novel, you all chose a fun story to write. And I think I did pretty okay in writing it, too!

So now to print my Winner's Certificate, I need a title. Except I REALLY suck at titles. I usually end up picking a character name (Scroobius Pip, Daisy) or other significant noun (Syrup) and call that the title. I was going to just call this sucker "Lorelei" until I realized that I could dodge the job of titling let y'all decide!

SO. What shall we name this novel? There's a short synopsis of the novel here if anyone needs a refresher.

Also I need a cover. I haven't looked, but Lulu.com has some stock covers and I might be able to find one in there. Otherwise I need something either in the public domain, or something someone creates specifically to use as the cover. Does anyone have any ideas for this?

Story installment #1

Beware: this is unedited rough draft. The first half or so has been spell-checked, but that's it. I make no guarantees for the last half. There are probably also some continuity errors, which is what happens when you're writing on the fly and trying really hard to remember to replace this word with that one.

The Story So Far...

Note: This post will serve as a collecting place for the poll results in the form of a summary. I'll update this as more poll results come in from the community, Twitter, and Wrimos at write-ins. I'm sorry to post twice in a row like this, but this is a one-time post that will be updated via edits, not re-posted.

Lorelei lives in a world where the Norse gods are real, and they introduced modern medicine about 500 years early. All the fancy pharmaceuticals we have, and a lot of the medical techniques, have been available for 500 years. Humans still think it is magic, though- doctors are raised from a young age to join the profession, and their training is all memorization. They memorize basically a grid of symptoms and drugs/treatments, which is passed down from the gods. It's considered an honor to be picked for this career, because you are serving the gods.

Lorelei is 26 years old, and in the final stages of training for being a doctor. She is the daughter of Loki, but she doesn't know that- though she does suspect she's a little different from those around her. She does take a bit after her father- she's crafty, for sure. As she goes through her training, she starts to figure out that the medicine isn't really magic- there are scientific principles behind everything, and anyone can do it, not just the gods. Living in the training facility, she only has her cat to talk to, so she does.

Once she figures this out, she begins to make her own medicines to help people, which upsets the gods. They confront her, and try to get her to stop, so she goes public with the news that medicine is not magical, but science that anyone can understand. Unfortunately, instead of inspiring people to do things on their own, it makes them think that all magical things are a lie, and they revolt against the gods, discovering other things that aren't really magic. The gods lock Lorelei away in exile and wipe humanity's memory, but Lorelei manages to escape and fight for humanity's freedom to seek knowledge.

Physical description of Lorelei (as determined by The DFW NaNo Rhinos at our Kick-Off party):
She's short, tiny, with big green eyes that sparkle. She has ivory skin, black hair that looks reddish in the sun. She keeps her hair styled short and spikey. She has freckles, and an extra toe on her left foot. People are drawn to her as if she is beautiful, but she's not traditionally beautiful, in that no one looking at her would be able to say why they find her attractive.

Poll 7.

I know I said I'd close poll 6 Friday, but don't you know that Saturday is the new Friday? Come on, get with the times.

ANYWAYS.

So there was a dead tie on the "What does Lorelei do with her knowledge" question, between her making her own medicine to help people, and telling the people and the people thinking all magical deeds are a lie. Thus, I shall combine them! Lorelei begins making her own good medicines to help people, and they are better than the gods' medicines, and word gets back to them that this human is doing this. They are unhappy, try to get her to stop, and instead she breaks the story to the people that medicine is not magic, but science, and that the gods are trying to cover it up. She hopes that this will inspire people to do things on their own, but it backfires and they instead begin to think that all magical things are a lie by the gods. This brings us to the next poll:

We're getting to the end of the big over-arching polls, I think. I'm going to start relying on Twitter polls, so if you're not already following me on Twitter, then you can find me here. If you're not on Twitter... then why not? I love Twitter <3 I'm going to start throwing out trivial polls today, to get me ready for my midnight start tonight.

Oh my word, that is TONIGHT. I'm still not ready! But then again, I'm never ready until I start writing, then it all settles. I won't panic! I won't I won't I won't! Except maybe just a little bit at 11:59 tonight.

To those of you who are about to die write, I salute you! Good luck and happy writing!

Poll SIX.

I'm calling poll 5 closed as of now, because I forgot to do it last night. I was tired, okay?

So here's what we have so far: Lorelei lives in a world where the Norse gods are real, and they introduced modern medicine about 500 years early.

Lorelei is 26 years old, and still in training for being a doctor.

In my research for this, I've been hitting up the Wikipedia articles for all the Norse gods and stories. Interestingly enough, there is a scholar that is quoted as saying that Loki's family is "pretty terrible, but very important" or something like that. Basically, all three of his children are terrible figures, but are important to the stories. This works out perfectly, since Lorelei is obviously an important person in this world, being our main character.

With all of that in mind, here's the next poll:

Poll Five is Live

Wahoo! We have results for poll 4, and this novel is getting interesting! The Norse gods have introduced MEDICINE to the world 500 years early, and the people still think it's magical. Medicine is delivered the "normal way", but humans don't understand how it works so it's still very mystical. I see it working like this- when someone is sick, they go to a doctor like normal, but the doctor consults some kind of chart or something to determine the medicine to give, because they don't really understand the concepts of medicine. It's all memorization, and since it's an honor to "work for the gods", they are selected at a young age to begin their training, which is really just a bunch of memorization of which drugs/treatments to give for which combinations of symptoms.

Our main character is the daughter of Loki, and I've made an executive decision regarding her name- I picked Lorelei from the entries, because helloooooooo, best Styx song EVER. Seriously, when I was a kid I loved that song so much I wanted to change my name to Lorelei, or name my future daughter Lorelei. I still kind of do. So I'm naming the main character Lorelei, and there's nothing anyone can do about it. Muahahahaha!

Ahem. On to the next poll!

ALSO! We need a plot! I'll take suggestions in the comments about what the main plot can be. Right now, my idea is that Lorelei figured out that medicine isn't really magic, but science, and starts figuring out how to manipulate it- for better for for her own gain, I'm not sure. Give me your input, or suggest something better!

I'll leave this poll up until Tuesday. It's getting so close to time to begin writing! I'm so excited! Exclamation points!!

The Fourth of Poll-y

Hey we have results for poll 3! So Norse gods have introduced technology way early, and people think it's all magic. And our main character is a 26-year-old daughter of a god. Awesome!

Poll three!

Holy cow, y'all DID read my mind! I was secretly hoping for Norse mythology, and when I checked the results, bam! Norse mythology! Hooray! You can see the screencapped results here, and if you didn't get a chance to vote then you still can, it just won't count towards my novel. Remember, I've got something up my sleeve for the poll results from EVERYONE at the end of all this, so it'll still be worth it to vote in all the polls.

Okay, on to this week's poll. First I'm going to pick my favorites from the possible history alterations and let everyone vote on those. I'm picking the ones that seem to work the best with Norse mythology being central, and also ones that I think I can work with. I hate to be picky, but if I list them all then the votes will be spread too thin, and also I need to make sure it's something I can actually *write* come November. Also, I'm combining similar entries that I think might work well together. After voting on this, we need to start figuring things out about the main character.

I'll leave this poll up until.... Sunday. Sunday night when I get home, I'll see what's going on and try to post the next poll.

By the way, I'm so glad y'all picked the "mythological" option. I was secretly hoping for that one. I have a secret preference for the mythology, too, but I'm keeping it secret so the poll will be "pure". I am crossing my fingers, though, that y'all can read my mind.

If you didn't get to vote in the first poll, go ahead and go back to it. I've screen-capped the results, so you won't break anything, and I have an idea of a fun thing to do when all the polls are finished.
